The Chevy Volt Hybrid from General Motors has a range of 40 miles on battery power when fully charged and the 1 litre three cylinder normal fuel engine acts as a generator to charge the battery and this engine can easily be replaced with an engine that runs on diesel, bio-diesel, ethanol or a hydrogen fuel cell, so you can pick the cleanest and best way to fuel your generator engine to charge your batteries.

This isn’t strictly a hybrid because although it has a fuel engine this is not used to drive the car but as a generator to charge the batteries and General Motors call it an Electric Vehicle with range extending capability, the engine is a turbocharged, 1.0L three cylinder engine with 71 hp that has no connection to the wheels. It drives a 53 kW generator that charges the lithium ion battery pack. The fuel engine starts and stops automatically as needed to charge the battery

Although the Chevrolet Volt only has a range of about 40 miles on the battery, when the fuel tank is filled it has a range of 640 miles, plus the Volt can do 0-60 mph acceleration in about 8.5 seconds, you can also charge the battery at home from a standard socket in about six hours.

General Motors are looking at several suppliers to get the Li-ion batteries from in sufficient quantities to make the car viable and one of these is Tesla, so once the battery problem is resolved we can look forward to seeing the first Volts roll off the production line.
