The Toyota Camry has a 2.4 litre standard fuel engine plus a 105kW electic motor which is run by a battery pack consisting of 34 nickel metal hydride modules, each of which contains six 1.2-volt cells. The Camry Hybrid does 0-60 in under 9 seconds, thats about a second faster than the Prius. Power is transferred to the front wheel drive by a continuously variable transmission (CVT).
The fuel engine of the Toyota Camry Hybrid will shut down when you stop and under certain driving conditions, so the airconditioning and power steering are driven electrically and powered by the cars batteries to maximize fuel economy and guarantee that the airconditioning continues to operate, fuel economy is around an average of 35mpg for mixed use.
Safety features are high on the list such as front seat mounted side airbags, side curtain airbags, a drivers knee airbag and antilock brakes plus stability control is optional. You also have the option to include a navigation system, leather seating and top of the range audio system.
In the US the Camry Hybrid costs around $1,500 more than the standard Camry sedan and you do have to sacrifice some of the luggage space because of the room taken up by the batteries, the space drops from 15 cubic feet to 10.6 cubic feet.
Toyota have shown with the Prius that a hybrid can work very well and now they have taken it a step further with the Camry and produced a hybrid sedan that is capable of large sales in the US market.
